by John McColgan

This book is published by the author of "Southern Highlands Story," a history of the original settlement and growth of the Berrima District, which was very favourably reviewed by "Publish Australia" of 1997. John McColgan is a fourth generation descendant of James McColgan who arrived in the colony as a convict on the ship Middlesex during 1840 and was sent to work at the old settlement of Bong Bong near the Wingecarribee River.

His Ticket of Leave was issued on the recommendation of Berrima Bench at Berrima on 7th March 1846. James McColgan was later introduced to a young Irish girl named Catherine Gannon by local priest Father William McGinty of Berrima. Catherine Gannon was one of the young orphan girls whose parents starved to death during the Great Irish Famine of 1846-50 who were transported by English authorities to act as servants in the colony.

Their wedding ceremony at Berrima was performed by Father McGinty on 15th. November 1850. It was to be the beginning of a long association of McColgans with the Berrima District.

Although historical in nature, this volume contains many small stories and incidents accumulated by both research and local knowledge gained over several generations.
