A seemingly dark novel, reminiscent of Camus, but with a glimmer of hope and indeed, humour and even romance, as the search for family and home amidst the pressures of an authoritarian society ensues....

A young man, Boots, escapes from a convict train in autumn leaving behind four of his companions from the labour camp with whom he has been incarcerated for nearly ten years. He shelters in a house belonging to a woman and her ailing mother-in-law (the only one left standing after a bombing campaign six years before).

The woman explains to him that her husband and her two sons were taken away by the military just before the bombing, when all the old people from the surrounding villages were herded into the New Village not far from her farmhouse.
